Florent: Space available

Friday, February 15, 2008

It finally looks like the granddaddy of the Meatpacking District, and the man partly responsible for having the entire Meatpacking District designated a Historic District, will be forced out of his place of business at 69 Gansevoort Street after 23 years. It’s not 100% certain that Mr. Florent Morellet, a 54 year old native of France, will have to leave his famed restaurant space but… from the sounds of the new asking rental price for his 1,500 sq ft location, it’s not looking good. The new asking price for the space is about $43,000/month as compared to the current rate of $6,000/month, clearly way above what the restaurant can cover. Matt Cohen of The Lansco Corporation, http://www.lansco.com, is representing the landlord in trying to find a new tenant for the space. Aside from the huge jump in rent, there is a legal battle between Mr. Morellet and the landlord, Joanne Lucas, over some real estate taxes. On February 5th the case went to court and Judge Mathew Cooper said he would be handing down a decision on the real estate tax dispute but gave no specific date.
